Our nation is now officially 250 years old. As we reflect on history—the military strength of the United Kingdom and the hardships and divisions among our own people—we can only say, “But God.” Against overwhelming odds, it was a miracle that the United States of America came into being. And only by God’s hand will we continue as a nation.
Many people may not realize that the First Great Awakening ended in 1770. God had moved throughout the colonies, leading many men and women to profess faith in Jesus Christ. Most of our Founding Fathers were men of faith who understood that our nation could not stand without God’s intervention. The Second Great Awakening began in 1787 and continued into 1843. Through these formative experiences, our heavenly Father helped shape the nation we are today.
As we consider our country today, we are troubled by the ongoing effort to remove God’s influence from every part of government. Yet we still see a glimmer of hope as faith begins to burn again. May we continually ask the God who guided the birth of our nation to draw us back to Himself. And may we one day celebrate another 250 years of independence.
